Temporary Synagogue for 1000 Worshippers

Large Marquee

Event Structure Hire was approached to provide a marquee for up to 1000 worshippers from Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue for the Jewish New Year celebrations in September 2010. The marquee was to be built on a football pitch in the grounds of a college in North London, it needed a solid floor, links to toilet facilities, heating, lighting, power and a stage.

For the main hall we had two options, either use a single large structure or use two smaller structures connected together, the client was not worried about having a row of legs down the middle of the marquee and so the most cost effective solution for them was to use two 12 metre wide marquees joined with a waterproof guttering down the middle.

The marquees were constructed in two stages over two days. On the first day the teams arrived at 0800h and began laying the 792 square metres of solid flooring. This is done by laying out the aluminium extrusion and wooden support battons and then laying the interlocking floorboards on top of that. This results in a nice flat, stable surface and also reduces the amount of equipment in direct contact with the ground which means the grass survives better.

By the end of the first day the flooring was all laid and the marquees were constructed. The team left site at 1830h and the next day a smaller team returned again at 0800h to finish the internal parts of the marquee including the laying of the carpet, the wiring of the electrics and the setting out of 1000 folding plastic samsonite chairs. We had also been contracted to provide an overnight presence in the marquee to protect it against possible vandalism and theft which meant that we could perform our structural and electrical checks at the same time. The marquee remained up for a week without any issues and was then removed in a single day to minimise the disruption caused to the host venue.
